Important Factors to Consider in the Placement of Trees

Last updated 1 year ago

Though tall, mature trees may look hardy, many species are surprisingly delicate. Just like any other plant, trees require plenty of thoughtful care in order to live long, healthy lives. If you place your tree in the wrong place, it may be susceptible to premature death, or your home may be at risk for damage. Here are a few important factors to consider when choosing where to plant your trees

·         Sunlight

Trees need a healthy dose of sunlight in order to complete photosynthesis—the process by which they create life-sustaining sugars and oxygen. When picking a place in your yard to plant your tree, pay careful attention to the path the sun takes in the sky. As long as your tree has several hours of direct sunlight each day, it will likely thrive.

·         Shade

When you plant a tree in your yard, you’re investing in the future comfort and beauty of your property. In a few years, your tree will become big enough to produce shade during the particularly hot days of summer. The best place for a shade-giving tree is usually on the southwest corner of the property, though you may want to consult a professional before you plant.

·         Growth

Perhaps the most important part of placing a tree is anticipating its growth. If you plant your tree too close to your house, you may have to spend hours every fall cleaning leaves from your gutters. Also, tree roots tend to seek out any source of underground water, including your pipes. To avoid tree root infiltration, plant your tree away from plumbing. Before you plant a particular tree, determine approximately how large it will grow so you can best determine where to place it. If your tree will be about 10 feet tall in maturity, for example, plant the tree at least 10 feet from your home.
